Or, if you really do have a couple of days you can play with, go down Hwy 93 from Wendover and see Great Basin National Park.īadwater is part of a vast national park with much more to see. Split the time between Death Valley and some other place – one of the Utah national parks, Salt Lake City, Antelope Island, or the Sierra Nevada. I wouldn’t devote an entire day to just the Bonneville Salt Flats. There are few visitor services and amenities conveniently close the gas station c-store I've seen in the past might still be there. The salt flats are a few minutes off I-80, about 60 miles from Salt Lake City to the east and Wendover to the west. You do not need to take a day to go there if Salt Lake City is on your itinerary and you just want to go see it. Cars can reach extraordinary speeds because the surface is so smooth and flat and there is almost no friction. IINM, the current world land speed record (as well as many earlier ones) was set there. ![]() ![]() I never tried to set a speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats, but as dez said, that’s where people do it. I have been to both places multiple times. The salt is very pure and will start doing its thing pretty soon, including in nooks and crannies that you may not readily see, ^ - Insert here “and ESPECIALLY if you take your own car,” for the same reason! Wash thoroughly, with high-pressure water, maybe at a commercial carwash that does undercarriages. ** “If you take a rental car out there, ^ you better wash underneath it before you return it. ![]()
